In more recent years I take the US route because my relatives still live in the southwest corner of Michigan, where I grew up. If you get that job near Jackson, I'll have to come visit you there on my way to see my family. Southern Michigan has lots and lots of beautiful lakes, but every one of them is riddled with motorboats.Jacqueline Donnellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13390548854179921303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1194066715822423007.post-58903328066982327732010-10-19T20:13:41.895-04:002010-10-19T20:13:41.895-04:00Such a long journey. When I saw those brown fuzzy grassland plants, the first thing that came to mind was clover, so I'm glad to see I was on the right track! So, when you drive/drove there, what route did you take, through PA/OH, or across Canada?

Phil - yes, leaving the Adirondacks will be hard, but with no work prospects here, one goes where the jobs are. This is a lovely area (southern MI) and I think I could be very happy there. Lots of new things to learn and see. BUT - no offers have been made yet, so let's not put the cart before the horse, eh? :)Ellen Rathbonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684750034177425795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1194066715822423007.post-44086328728340968022010-10-18T09:28:42.202-04:002010-10-18T09:28:42.202-04:00A familiar trip! I expect you'll be sorry to leave Newcomb--and I will miss your always-excellent posts from there--but Jackson is near Ann Arbor, which is a great town. Southern Michigan has nothing like the Adk Forest Preserve, but plenty of parks, with terrific birding.

Good luck!Phil Terrienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1194066715822423007.post-9715040936615894532010-10-17T19:01:26.190-04:002010-10-17T19:01:26.190-04:00Oh my! I used to make that same trip to Michigan ...Oh my! I used to make that same trip to Michigan every year when our kids were young and their grandparents still alive. That nature center you visited is not far from Ann Arbor, where I went to college. A different kind of landscape than the Adirondacks, but beautiful in its own right. Regarding the plants you found, yes, I think those small yellow ones are some kind of Bidens, but which one, I don't know without examining them closely. The brown burr-like ones I'm pretty sure are Round-headed Bush Clover, but I don't have any idea what the dark berries would be. Have a safe trip home. Believe me, I remember what a long, long drive it is. I'm crossing my fingers for you, regarding the potential job. Good luck!Jacqueline Donnellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13390548854179921303noreply@blogger.com
